Author's comments:
Zoom from the edge of the universe to the quantum foam of spacetime and learn the scale of things along the way! Learn the size of the Pillars of Creation and marvel at the minuscule scale of a neutrino!

The Scale of the Universe is an educational game by Fotoshop (Also known as Carykh). It portrays a range of various objects, both minuscule and tiny, throughout the universe.

Design[]

Scale of the Universe is not a game in the traditional sense. There are no playable characters, no enemies, no goals, and no way to lose. Instead, players observe a wide variety of objects. Players can zoom in and out using either a cursor at the bottom of the screen or the arrow keys. This makes the objects in the center expand and push out the surrounding objects when zooming in, and the opposite is achieved when zooming out. The size of objects is portrayed in the metric system. Each object has its height labeled next to it, and occasional rings with labeled widths give context. The player can zoom out to see the entire universe, the largest known object, or far in enough to see Quantum Foam, the smallest known object.

Presentation[]

The game has a simple white background, so that players can observe each object on its own terms. Each item is drawn simply and with color, so that they are easily recognizable. A song by Cliff Martinez, which was originally used for the computer game Spore, plays in the background.[1]

Reception[]

The Scale of the Universe made a splash upon hitting Newgrounds. As of February 2012, it has over 3.7 million views and an average review of 9.8/10. It also won the Daily Feature and Weekly Users' Choice awards, and even reached the coveted best scoring submissions of all time spot for a short time, before being usurped by "Last of the Dashkin." The game was also featured in several articles outside of the Newgrounds community.[2]

On February 1, 2012, a sequel was made, called Scale of the Universe 2. This game is essentially an expanded version of the original, including new features and objects. It also won the Daily Feature and Weekly Users' Choice awards.[3]
