Zoom from the edge of the universe to the quantum foam of spacetime and learn the scale of things along the way! Learn the size of the Pillars of Creation and marvel at the minuscule scale of a neutrino!

The Scale of the Universe is an educational game by Fotoshop. It portrays a range of various objects, both minuscule and tiny, throughout the universe.

Design

The Scale of the Universe is not a game in the traditional sense. There are no playable characters, no enemies, no goals, and no way to lose. Instead, players can observe a wide variety of objects. Players can zoom in and out using either a cursor at the bottom of the screen or the arrow keys. This makes the objects in the center expand and push out the surrounding objects when zooming in, and the opposite is achieved when zooming out. The size of objects is portrayed in the metric system. Each object has its height labeled next to it, and occasional rings give context. The player can zoom out to see the entire universe, or far in enough to see Quantum Foam.

Presentation

The Scale of the Universe

One of the more zoomed out scenes.

The game has a simple white background, so that players can observe each object on its own terms. Each item is drawn simply and with color, so that they are easily recognizable. A song by Cliff Martinez plays in the background.
