Territory War is a Worms-style team combat game by Afro-Ninja, submitted in March 2006. It has been very popular on Newgrounds and Afro-Ninja has since put in on his own site and made it available for players to play each other online.
Design[]
Territory War has three main modes: Campaign, Challenges, and Custom Battles. The main campaign consists of 10 scenarios that must be completed in order to progress. The six challenges are timed, as is the total time to complete every challenge. Custom Battles can be played against another human or the computer, with teams of one to six stickmen. The game also features six maps, two of which are locked at the start of the game.
Gameplay[]
Each game starts with the two teams' respective stickmen in two distinct areas. One stickman from either side goes at a time, followed by the opponent stickman. Turn order only changes when a character is lost. Enemies can be killed by either draining their health or knocking them off the screen. At the beginning of each turn, players can either move their character a limited distance, ala 2D platformer, or choose to hold still. Then, they can choose to either use an attack or pass their turn. The first attack type is a grenade. It can be tossed long distances and do area damage. However, it can backfire if handled poorly. The second weapon is a rifle. Although it usually does little damage, a shot to the head will eliminate half of a stickman's health, making it a weapon most useful for finishing off a wounded opponent. The last weapon is the boot. Although it also does little damage, it is useful for knocking enemies off of platforms when they are close enough. The boot can also be used to knock your guys closer to the front lines, although this is only useful on healthy teammates.
Presentation[]
The graphics of Territory War are simple, as the small File Size suggests. Each character is an identical stickman, and platforms and environments, though easily distinguishable, are simply drawn. However, the game features a wide variety of music by a number of artists, including ParagonX9.
Reception on Newgrounds[]
The game received a Daily 1st and Weekly 5th on Submission and as of January 2012, has over 2.3 million views. It is in four Collections including Flash Portal History: 2006. An online multiplayer version was submitted in 2008, and was also popular.[1] It can now also be found on websites such as Xgen Studios.
