Meat Boy

The protagonist of the game, Meat Boy.

Super Meat Boy is a 2010 console video game by Team Meat. It is the sequel of Edmund McMillen's flash game Meat Boy. The game was released on the Xbox Live Arcade and Steam to overwhelmingly positive reception.

Overview[]

Super Meat Boy features the namesake protagonist on a journey to save his girlfriend, Bandage Girl, from the evil Dr. Fetus.

The game is a precision platformer and features over 300 levels filled with deadly obstacles using Meat Boy's running and jumping abilities. Considering the sheer number of dangers, this makes the game notably difficult: with many claiming it to have popularized the "massocore" platformer subgenre.

By collecting bandages, players can also use characters from other indie games, some of whom originate from other Newgrounds projects such as Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers.

Reception[]

Super Meat Boy received overwhelmingly positive reception critically, and sold over 22,000 copies on the first day of its release.

The game's co-creator, Edmund McMillen, claimed in Indie Game The Movie that, at launch, the game received the "second highest metacritic score of all time on Xbox Live".[1] Super Meat Boy also won GameSpot's and Gametrailer's awards for the Best Downloadable Game of 2010.

Sequel[]

A sequel to Super Meat Boy, Super Meat Boy Forever, launched in 2021.

Several popular Newgrounds animators comprised the development team of this new project, such as IvanAlmighty, Paul ter Voorde and Gregzilla.

The game received many mixed reviews due to its autorunning gameplay style.[2][3]
