I originally posted this on Newgrounds in 1999, before the current Portal system.

Your master is dead, and you're out for mindless revenge against everyone! Use the arrow keys to walk, "A" to attack, "S" to jump and "D" to block.

This game was made in Flash 4, which is why the keyboard input is laggy. Flash 4 didn't allow consistent keyboard input, so I had to fudge it to make the character move as smoothly as possible. I was tempted to fix it, but decided to maintain the terrible integrity of the original.

It is also worth noting that Flash 4 didn't support depth swapping, so it was a pain in the butt to make the characters overlap eachother based on their depth on the screen. I don't say this stuff to be boastful, I say it because I want people to appreciate why my old games are so terrible. These were the pinnacle of Flash programming at one point and I need some props!

The background art was by Michael Bregman. I did the rest!

Samurai Asshole is a 1999 Flash game by Tom Fulp. It was made in Flash 4, and it was his first major game after Pico's School.

Story[edit | edit source]

Samurai Asshole's master was a guest of honour at a festival held by three religious leaders. When the master choked on a piece of chicken and died, he was obligated by tradition to avenge his master's death, despite the sorrow expressed by the leaders. Samurai Asshole fought a group of temple guards before being summoned into the clouds by a dragon. After defeating the dragon, he goes back onto

Samurai Asshole was a full-fledged Flash fighting game, something revolutionary upon release.

Earth, where he fights more guards until stumbling upon a spaceship. As he flies away from earth, two aliens that resemble Cassandra's final form from Pico's School discuss their plans to invade Earth from their own spaceship. Samurai Asshole lands in a smurf village, and after defeating two smurfs, he shouts with surprise. The game ends on a cliffhanger.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Samurai Assholewas was remarkable upon release for it's keyboard based controls. Players moved in four directions, and could also attack, jump, or block. Although the controls are slow and laggy by modern terms, it was still a big step up from games like Pico's School, which used only the mouse. In the 2006 re-release, Tom Fulp chose to keep the primitive controls in order to remain true to the original game.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Samurai Asshole was one of the more popular games in Newgrounds's early history. It set the stage for future brawlers, including Dad n' Me. In 2006, he reuploaded it, and it has since had over 490,000 views. It currently has an average score of 3.72/5 and average review of 6.8/10.
