Prodigy was an online service manufactured by Prodigy Communications Corporation, active since 1984 until 2001, that offered its subscribers access to a broad range of networked services. It was one of the major internet service providers of the 1990s, and Tom Fulp originally had created Newgrounds under the name "New Ground" as an fanzine of the videogame console Neo Geo, being "New" an synonym of "Neo" and "Grounds" a synonym of "Geo"

Prodigy Communications Corporation claimed Prodigy was the first consumer online service, as CompuServe, another online service started on 1979, used an command-line interface. Prodigy was the largest online service provider circa 1993, surpassing CompuServe. However, due to sites like Geocities or AOL which where easier to use, Prodigy lost popularity, and on 2001, Prodigy Communications Corporation was adquired by SBC Communications, which on 2005 was renamed as AT&T. The Mexican branch was adquired by Telmex.
