I wish I were the Moon is a Flash art game by Daniel Benmergui. It is considered one of the premiere art games on Newgrounds.

Design Edit

I wish I were the Moon is a fairly simple game. The scene where the game takes place includes several objects and characters. There is a girl on a boat staring at a boy, serenely sitting upon a large, floating moon, which he seems to be in love with. In short, there seems to be a strange love triangle between the boy, the girl, and the moon. Shooting stars and a gull regularly fly above. Players can select most of the objects and transport them to any other part of the screen. Depending on what the player does, one of five endings are possible. The game can be reset by clicking the R key.

Endings Edit

  • Tragedy - Either the girl or the boy drowns in the water.
  • Lost Love - The boy and the girl stay on the boat while the moon floats into the sky.
  • Bring Me the Moon - After the Lost Love ending, the moon comes back down in a miniature form, and reunites with the boy
  • Seagull trip - The boy and the girl fly away on the seagull together
  • I am your Moon - The boy and girl switch places, and the girl plays a song

Presentation Edit

I wish I were the moon

Unrequitted love is the hardest.

Like many art games, I wish I were the Moon uses a highly pixelated style. However, there is a fair amount of detail. For example, characters' sprites will change based on where they are in comparison to the object of their desire. Most of the game has no sound. However, "Lamento di Tristano and La Rotta" plays during one of the endings.

Reception Edit

I wish I were the Moon has over 130,000 views, not necessarily a huge amount by the standards of Newgrounds. However, it has been a major critical hit. In addition to an average review of 9.2/10, the game is featured in both the Flash Portal History and Art Games collection, the second of which it shares an icon with.
