Effing Worms is an action game, created by EffingGames. It allows the player to control a constantly evolving worm that is terrorizing the local populace.
origins[]
Effing Worms features a combination of a short campaign and a high score mode. The player controls a fucking worm as it burrows through the ground and emerges to eat local civilians, dogs, soldiers, and vehicles. The number of remaining targets is displayed on the bottom right corner of the screen. Once all enemies are eaten, the worm gets bigger, and the player must choose one of two upgrades for the worm. However, time is not on the player's side. The worm's health is represented by a "Hunger" bar, which steadily decreases over time. Enemy attacks also harm the worm, and the bar can only be restored by either finishing a stage or by eating enemies. If the player eats enough enemies in a short period of time, they enter a "Rampage" mode, in which they move more quickly.
Eventually, the player stops receiving upgrades, and must play for as long as they can off of what they can eat. Once defeated, one can record their high score.
Gameplay[]
The worm can be controlled using either the WASD keys or the arrow keys. The W/Up key is used to accelerate the worm forward, based on the direction the head is pointing in. The A/Left and D/Right keys are used to rotate the head, and thus steer. Although the worm will automatically move at a steady pace, the S/Down key can be used to decelerate.
Presentation[]
Effing Worms features essentially one circular stage, which is constantly refilled with enemies. Different enemy types are distinct, and the various upgrades on the worm give it different appearances. Sounds were provided by SoS, a group of freelance composers on Newgrounds.
Reception[]
Effing Worms received the Daily Feature award. Additionally, as of December 2011, the game has over 790,000 views, in addition to an average review of 9.3/10. The game got excellent reviews except for quite a few users complaining about the games controls.
