Ben Spurgin (11/5/1977 - 10/13/2009) was the creator of the popular Flash series The Stick Slayer and Pimp's Quest. He was also known for his one-man power metal band The Spurginator.

Ben's Flash Movies

Ben had a grand total of 44 Flash submissions from 2000 to 2007, starting with the reviled Straight-Up Carnage and ending with more popular movies like Lord of the Pimps.

Ben's best known series is "Stick Slayer," whichhas been given its own collection on Newgrounds. These movies featured the "Stick Slayer" killing the hordes of stickmen who at the time dominated much of Newgrounds. These movies were mostly submitted in 2001, but were released as late as 2005.

In total, Ben Spurgin won 35 awards, including four Weekly Users Choice, fifteen Daily Features, and two Review Crew Pick. However, after 2005, he had no new Flash submissions, though he mentioned that he was working on a new Stick Slayer as late as 2009.[1]

Ben's Audio

Ben had 15 Audio tracks, mostly submitted in 2008 and 2009, when he had long since stopped submitting Flash. Unlike his Flash movies, which had a very wide range of scores, Ben's music was almost universally considered good, with all but one of his songs receiving a score of over 4/5.[2] One of his tracks, Valhalla Bound, supposedly has had over 100,000 downloads, though this is almost certainly a glitch due to the relatively low number of listens.[3]

Death

In May of 2009, Spurgin announced that he would be returning to Flash with Stick Slayer IX after a four-year hiatus. Unfortunately, the movie would never see the light of day; Spurgin died of a heroin overdose on October 13, 2009.[4]

On September 30, 2010, PsychoGoldfish declared November 5th 2010 to be Ben Spurgin Tribute Day. A couple of tributes were created for him. Tom Fulp and PsychoGoldfish also collaborated on a game based on his Pee Man series, which quickly outstripped the relatively unknown series's popularity.[5]
