316

The 316 sword is one of the two trademark weapons Jesus uses in the Madness Combat series. It is a powerful two-handed longsword with the numbers "100111100" inscribed on its surface. This is a binary code which translates to the number sequence "316". The weapon first appeared in Madness Avenger, but at the time it lacked the number inscription (which it gained in the next episode, Madness Apotheosis).

The sword changed its appearance in Madness Consternation by being significantly slimmed down and shortened in length, but it still bears the binary code. It also appeared in Madness Inundation when Jesus summoned it after his encounter with the auditor, although he never used it.

Number sequence

The series of zeros and ones on the sword could relate to binary code translates into "316"; however no one has shown that the author intended this. There has been some speculation on the possible significance of the number 316:

Bible Passage - It is confirmed that this number correlates with the Bible passage John 3:16 which reads, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." This would indicate a play on Jesus' character being that he is an obvious reference to Jesus Christ [1].

South Park Episode - This is also coincidentally the same number in relation to South Park Episode no. 316, entitled "Are you there, God? It's me, Jesus". The episode partially deals with Jesus wanting God to make an appearance as part of a miracle. Once again it is a play on Jesus.

Historical Event - In the year 316 AD, Constantine I, the emperor of Rome, banned crucifixion as a method for punishing slaves. This may be a reference to Jesus's crucifixion.

Stainless Steel - Ironically, 316 is part of a series of stainless steels, most notable for its use in combination with organisms, due to a lack of corrosion.
